Saint Teresa of Avila | Ascension

St. Teresa was lively and imaginative as a child, even attempting to run away in search of martyrdom. After her mother’s death, she was educated by Augustinian nuns and later entered the Carmelite monastery.

Her early religious life was marked by illness and spiritual dryness, making prayer difficult. In her late thirties, however, she experienced a profound spiritual awakening that transformed her interior life, leading to deep devotion and the mystical experiences she later recorded in her writings.

Moved to renew religious life, Teresa began reforming the Carmelite order, founding the Discalced Carmelites—a branch rooted in simplicity, poverty, and contemplative prayer. Despite opposition and the hardships of travel, she established many reformed convents across Spain and became a respected spiritual leader. Her writings, including The Interior Castle and The Way of Perfection, are enduring spiritual classics reflecting on prayer and the soul’s journey to God.

She is depicted holding a journal and quill, which symbolize her writings, with a crystal castle in the background inspired by her vision of the soul. Her halo echoes the arches of a cloister, with patterns drawn from Spanish art.
