Saint Josephine Bakhita | Ascension image 0

St. Josephine Bakhita is the patron saint of victims of human trafficking. Captured and sold into slavery as a child, she experienced terrible suffering at the hands of cruel masters. She was eventually sold to a family in Italy, where she went to live with the Canossian sisters for a time. There she learned about Jesus and realized that he was the master her heart had yearned for. In Jesus she found true freedom and wanted to dedicate her life to him.

She fought for and won her freedom in court and joined the Canossian sisters. She worked as a cook and door keeper, greeting everyone with a warm smile. She travelled to other convents, sharing her story and helping missionaries prepare for work in Africa.

She is depicted in her religious habit, including the medal of Our Lady of Sorrows which she wore. The sunflowers symbolize her sunny disposition and contagious joy, and the crumbling chains represent not only her freedom from slavery, but ultimately the freedom she found in Christ. The African-style halo reflects her Sudanese heritage.
