St. Martin was born to a Spanish noble and a mother who was a freed slave of African or possibly Native American descent. Growing up in segregated 16th century Peru, he experienced a great deal of suffering on account of being biracial.
Despite this, Martin longed to enter religious life, which was illegal at the time for people of colour. At 15, he joined the Dominicans as a servant boy, eagerly performing the most menial of tasks. After 8 years, the Dominicans disobeyed the law and allowed Martin to take vows as a 3rd order member, and eventually the full habit as a lay brother. He spent the rest of his life working in the kitchen, laundry, and eventually the infirmary where he remained in charge until his death. He was beloved for his gentle kindness towards everyone he encountered.
St. Martin is depicted wearing his Dominican habit and carrying a basket of bread to serve the poor. He is surrounded by the olive trees he is said to have planted and which still stand in Lima to this day. The unique style of his halo reflects his Peruvian culture.
