Servant of God Thea Bowman | Ascension

I partnered with Fr. Josh Johnson and Ascension to create this painting of Servant of God Thea Bowman, a holy nun of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration who lived during the twentieth century and dedicated her life to teaching and sacred music. She encourages Catholics to bring their cultural experience and unique talents to the ministry of the Church.

She is depicted wearing a vibrant kaftan and headwrap similar to what she wore toward the end of her life. The books represent her role as a teacher, and the magnolias in the background are the state flower of Mississippi, where she was born, raised, and eventually died, and are a symbol of joy and perseverance.
