Saint Augustine of Hippo | Ascension

I partnered with Fr. Josh Johnson and Ascension to create this painting of Saint Augustine of Hippo. He is shown holding parchments to represent his many famous writings and a flaming heart which symbolizes his burning love for God. The background depicts the story of when he was walking down the beach contemplating the mystery of the Trinity. He encountered a child pouring water into a hole in the sand. When Augustine exclaimed that it is not possible to fit the whole ocean into so small a hole, the child reminded him that neither is it possible for him to comprehend the nature of God. The child then disappeared. His halo draws elements from both his African heritage and Roman citizenship.
