“I became the most humble and abject of all, so that you might conquer your pride through my humility.” —The Imitation of Christ, p.128 by Thomas A. Kempis
After Jesus was brutally scourged, the Roman soldiers put a scarlet robe on his bloodied shoulders, pressed a crown of thorns into his brow, and placed a reed in his right hand. They mocked him and spit on him, crying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
But what they didn’t understand is that his kingdom is not of this world, and these things which were intended to humiliate him would instead become the very symbols of his victory. While an earthly king might claim a golden crown and jewelled sceptre and fine robes, Jesus chose to become the least among us so that he might conquer the world.
It is my hope that as you meditate on this image, you will come to know that Christ is King.
