Nursing Mother

Following in the tradition of Madonna Lactans, this drawing depicts Mary breastfeeding baby Jesus.

Some may be shocked by the sight of Mary’s partially exposed breast, as well they should be. Seeing our saviour as an infant so utterly dependant on the body of a woman brings us face to face with the shocking reality of the incarnation. Our all-powerful God chose to become fully human so that he could experience—and thus sanctify—a full human life.
