Shortly after I was married in 2015, I found out I was expecting our first child. I had only just begun dabbling in painting but I wanted to make the announcement to my husband in a special way. I rushed to the store to buy some art supplies, and quickly painted this portrait before he returned home from work. He took one look and knew immediately.

In the years that followed, I would paint many more images of Mary and the saints. I titled this painting "Unexpected", for the unexpected way that God chose to save his people, but also for the unexpected conception of a new ministry in sacred art.
