I partnered with Fr. Josh Johnson and Ascension to create this painting of Saint Josephine Bakhita. She is depicted in her religious habit, including the medal of Our Lady of Sorrows which she wore. The sunflowers symbolize her sunny disposition and contagious joy, and the crumbling chains represent not only the freedom from slavery she fought for and won in court, but ultimately the freedom she found in Christ. The African-style halo reflects her Sudanese heritage.
